WHAT
TO EXPECT WHEN YOU VISIT AND WHAT ARE BASIC BELIEFS OF MEMBERS
OF THE STRATHMORE BLVD. CHURCH OF CHRIST?
When you come and visit with us you can expect to receive
a warm welcome. You can expect to share in a worship service
where God receives praise and honour for his many blessings.
You can expect the Bible to be used as our only rule of faith
and practice.
You'll quickly notice we love to sing praises to God and that
the words of the songs are designed to teach and encourage
those in attendance (Colossians 3:16). The only instrument
of music that we use is our hearts (Ephesians 5:19).
On Sunday mornings we set aside time to remember Jesus and
his sacrifice on the cross. As in the first century this is
done as we share bread and the fruit of the vine. During this
time we are reminded that it is only through Christ's sacrifice
that we have been able to become his (1 Corinthians 11:17-34).
A collection is taken each Sunday. This is when members are
asked to give to support the work of this congregation (1
Corinthians 16:1-2; 2 Corinthians 8:1-15). As you wouldn't
ask a guest at your table to "pay for their meal,"
so we do not ask or expect our guests to give.
At various times during our assemblies prayers will be offered
by different members (1 Timothy 2:1-8). These reflect our
dependence upon God and our desire for his leading in our
lives.
The Bible will be read and referred to quite often. Whether
it is a public reading of scripture or preaching (1 Timothy
4:13), the Bible serves as the basis for all that is taught.
Our desire is to simply be Christians, without a denominational
name. We desire to express our love for Christ by following
his example and living daily in obedience to his teaching.
We identify ourselves as a congregation, or church, of Christ,
modeled by the original church Christ established on the day
of Pentecost.
Some of our basic beliefs
are:
* That God is all knowing, all powerful,
ever present and active in our world.
* That Jesus is God's one and only son and through faith in
Him comes eternal life.
* That the Bible is God's inspired word, it is without error,
and it provides direction for daily living.
* That that baptism is essential for salvation.
* That the Holy Spirit is a gift received at the time of baptism.
* That Christ's church is distinctive and each congregation
autonomous.
* That we must honour the historic value of our religious
heritage: in essential matters of faith, we seek unity; in
matters of opinion, we embrace freedom; and in all things,
we practice love.
* That every Christian is to have the heart of a servant --
practicing humility, and generosity toward others.
* That families of all sizes are the foundational institution
of society and we must remain true to the foundational values
specified in the Bible as a guide for family life.
THE BIBLE TEACHES FOR ONE
TO BE SAVED FROM SIN ONE MUST:
o Hear the word of God (Romans 10:17);
o Believe the word of God (John 3:16; 8:24);
o Repent of sins (II Corinthians 7:10, Luke 13:3,5);
o Confess one's faith in Christ (Matthew 10:9-10; Romans 10:9-10);
o Be baptized (immersed) into Christ for the remission of
sins (Romans 6:3,4; Galatians 3:27; Acts 2:38);
o Remain faithful in the Christian walk (Revelation 2:10;
I John 1:7).
